The church of St Ursmer at Lobbes is possibly the oldest church in Wallonia.
The nave and transepts certainly date from the Carolingian period.
From the end of the 11th century (or, according to a recent study, from the end of the 10th century, the period during which a chapter of canons was established), the church was altered, in particular by the enlargement of the chancel and the modifications to the huge, semi-underground crypt, which still exists.
