From the year 1750 and as a result of the healing of Arnold Franck, who was afflicted with epilepsy, the veneration of the Mother of God developed in Moresnet. Here, they cared for the many people who made pilgrimages to the beloved Lady of the "Eichschen". From then on, the pilgrimages increased significantly.
In his effort to connect the veneration of the Mother of God with the cult of St. Francis of Assisi, the then superior of the Franciscans, Johannes Ruiter, designed the project for building a Stations of the Cross. This would allow the faithful to walk the path of redemption with the sorrowful Mother.
The hilly terrain, particularly the elevated area around the 12th Station, was realized with the simple tools of the time and through the voluntary efforts of many locals. Whether pilgrim or casual visitor, everyone today finds in the area of the Calvary Hill in Moresnet-Chapelle the peace and beautiful tranquility of nature, which threatens to be taken away by the hustle and bustle of today.
