Plombières, near Aachen, is not named that by coincidence. In the 19th century, lead was extracted there. Belgium also had zinc mines in that area. But when you find lead and zinc, there are also other metals that can be found as a byproduct of zinc and lead extraction. I think of indium – used in LCD screens – gallium and germanium – used in transistors, solar cells, and fiber optic cables. They are building blocks for modern technology that we can hardly do without anymore. But that doesn’t mean it's always profitable to mine them.
