Not so long ago (a few decades) there were numerous tall fruit trees in the surrounding orchards. The farmers picked apples, pears, cherries, etc. The harvest, sold at the markets of Ronse and Ath, provided them with a significant extra income. Were these trees sacrificed on the altar of profitability and progress? For every felled tree, ministerial bonuses were paid. It really crashes when you pull them out!!! Nowadays, intensive monoculture has pushed out the biodiversity of the plots and destroyed the hedgerow landscape. There are still a few specimens of these fruit trees remaining here, and the ladder (preserved above) is a testament to that time.
