The Bucrania fountain is one of the most noteworthy examples of the buildings erected in relation to water culture found in these lands, where different kinds of traditional fountains can be found which were very important in the territory. There were more than 30 in this municipality of Vilardevós. Fountains are communal type buildings for supplying inhabitants nearby.
The Bucrania fountain of Tomonte stands out because it is a traditional spa housed in a retaining wall which covers two different heights. The water falls over the rectangular basin sculpt from single piece of granite. Fitted over the retaining wall are two Roman reliefs, one in high relief representing the heads of two oxen called bucrania, (from Greek ‘bu’: boi). These two pieces were found and moved from their original location in the Roman site of Tomonte, where the remains of Roman bricks were also found. In Tomonte you can visit other traditional buildings with great ethnographic value like the communal oven outside the town or the group of country wineries conceived as a group construction and which still preserve the columns and basins beautifully worked and carved from stone.
