The water tower of Schimmert, nicknamed the Giant of Schimmert, is built on the highest point of the plateau of Schimmert, on the south side of the village. The 38-meter-high water tower dates back to 1927 and was designed by architect Jos Wielders, who was inspired by the architecture of the Amsterdam School.
The tower is built of concrete and clad with bricks. The tower has a round shaft with a cantilevered flat bottom reservoir. The two round projecting stair towers lead to the reservoir and the roof pavilion.
The tower was renovated in the 1970s and 1990s and recently in late 2008. The tower currently has the status of a national monument. WML (Waterleiding Maatschappij Limburg) sold the tower in 2015. The new owner wants the distinctive tower to be preserved for Schimmert and the surrounding area. He has submitted a plan to establish a data center in the tower and use the waste heat from all these servers to heat houses in the area.
