¿Sabías que en septiembre de 1914 todos los hombres de 16 años y más fueron encarcelados por el ejército alemán en la iglesia de Bavegem y allí tuvieron que pasar la noche? Esto está en el informe del entonces párroco de Bavegem:
"...las procesiones diarias se suspendieron el 7 de septiembre de 1914, día en que el ejército alemán llegó a Bavegem con 300 hombres. También fue en la noche del 7 al 8 de septiembre que todos los hombres de 16 años fueron encarcelados en la iglesia junto con las autoridades eclesiásticas y civiles; pero es innecesario añadir que, cuando esta orden se difundió en la parroquia, la mayor parte huyó a los municipios cercanos, de modo que solo unas cien personas pasaron la noche en la iglesia. Los prisioneros fueron liberados al día siguiente por la mañana y se les permitió regresar a casa sanos y salvos."
