La Congoberg se refiere a los muchos hacheros y mineros que regresaban a sus familias sucios de la mina de carbón y aún negros como el aceite (del francés houille = carbón de piedra). Vollezele contaba con muchos mineros que iban en tren (línea de ferrocarril 123) a las minas valonas. La mayoría de los carboneros vivía en la empobrecida aldea de Achterdenbos.
