El caserío de Brandhoek se encuentra, durante la guerra, en gran parte fuera del alcance de la artillería alemana. También hay campamentos, almacenes y puestos médicos ('Field Ambulances'). El cementerio 'Brandhoek Military Cemetery' comienza en mayo de 1915. Durante la tercera batalla de Ypres en 1917 se añaden otros dos cementerios.
La tumba con más flores y/o cruces es la del Capitán Noël Godfrey Chavasse. Recibe el 'Victoria Cross' en dos ocasiones. Solo 3 otros militares reciben el mismo honor. Es hijo del obispo de Liverpool y “médico”. Su primer 'Victoria Cross' lo obtiene en el Somme en 1916. Salva a varios heridos que se encuentran a unos 25 metros de la línea alemana. El segundo lo recibe póstumamente, ya que en agosto de 1917 continúa atendiendo a otros soldados en Wieltje, en Ypres, aunque él mismo ha sido herido. Unos días después, explota un granada cerca del puesto de auxilio. Chavasse es trasladado gravemente herido al hospital de campaña en Brandhoek. Muere allí el 4 de agosto de 1917.
