Después de la destrucción del pueblo en 1489, sólo quedó en pie la torre románica del siglo XII. Los habitantes de Overijse no perdieron el ánimo y comenzaron la reconstrucción de la iglesia en estilo gótico. En 1692, durante un incendio, la iglesia volvió a arder. Fue reconstruida nuevamente y en el siglo XIX sufrió una última restauración neogótica. Bajo el coro se encuentra la cripta de los señores de Overijse de los últimos doscientos años del Ancien Régime (siglos XVII-XVIII).
