En este lugar puedes ver por qué Klerken fue importante y por qué era fundamental tener una vista. Quien no tuviera altura debía obtener su información geográfica de globos vulnerables o vuelos de pilotos. Y una base de observación permanente como esta era sin duda más conveniente.
Klerken estuvo ocupada por Alemania durante toda la guerra, era una ciudad de suministro y un nodo para el abastecimiento al frente. También construyeron allí una torre de observación. En octubre de 1914, la población en su mayoría huye a otros lugares. Solo el sacerdote Denys y las monjas del convento permanecen en la ciudad y acogen a refugiados en “el asilo” donde huérfanos, discapacitados, enfermos y refugiados se reúnen. Denys lleva un diario.
