El lugar fue incorporado el 28 de octubre de 1928 y hoy cuenta con alrededor de 8000 habitantes. Sonnenberg limita al noreste del centro de la ciudad y forma con él, tras la expansión de la construcción, una zona de asentamiento cerrada. El núcleo histórico de la ciudad se encuentra entre las estribaciones del Taunus en el estrecho valle del afluente Salzbach, Rambach. Al noreste de Sonnenberg se encuentra el barrio de Rambach.
