Originalmente, se trata de una obra mística de la Edad Media, dedicada a la pasión de Cristo antes y durante su crucifixión. La mayoría de los intérpretes - así será también en Oberammergau - son aficionados locales que a menudo han participado en el evento durante muchos años junto con toda su familia.
