Fue construida alrededor de 1230 por Otto I de Schaumberg, quien a partir de entonces se llamó Otto von Schauenstein en honor a su nuevo castillo en el Frankenwald. Desde 1222 fue ministerial de los duques de Andechs-Meranien y murió en 1237. Su hijo Eberhard I y sus nietos Tuto y Heinrich III von Schauenstein poseyeron el castillo hasta 1271. Luego, el castillo y el tribunal de Schauenstein pasaron a la hija de Heinrich. Ella se casó con Konrad von Wolfstriegel, lo que llevó a que Schauenstein pasara a ser propiedad de esta familia y, por ende, al ámbito de influencia de los vogts de Weida y más tarde a los condes de Nuremberg. Posteriormente, se convirtió en la sede de los oficiales de Brandenburg-Kulmbach, cuyo primero fue Erhart von Machwitz.
El castillo es desde 1988 la sede del Museo de Bomberos de Alta Franconia y del Museo Regional de Schauenstein.
