El lago Rantzauer se encuentra en la ciudad de Barmstedt, en el distrito de Pinneberg, en el suroeste de Schleswig-Holstein. Tiene unas dimensiones de aproximadamente 420 por 280 metros, una superficie de 7,5 hectáreas y no es más profundo de tres metros.
Entre los años 1934 y 1938, el lago fue excavado manualmente por el Servicio de Trabajo del Reich por orden de los nazis. El nivel del agua del lago Rantzauer se regula mediante la acumulación del Krückau, que lo abastece. Esta intervención en la naturaleza y la consiguiente interrupción del camino de migración para la fauna piscícola local causaron problemas en el pasado. Por lo tanto, en 1981 se construyó una escalera de peces de nueve niveles en la compuerta del islote del castillo, a través de la cual los peces pudieron reanudar su migración hacia los lugares de desove superiores.
