Conecta el centro de la ciudad con los barrios Debschwitz y Heinrichsgrün situados al oeste del río y a la vez forma la carretera de salida occidental de la ciudad, ya que la carretera federal 2 cruza aquí el Elster. En su borde oriental, el puente con las calles Am Sommerbad desde el norte, Elsterdamm desde el sur y Heinrichstraße desde el este forma uno de los cruces de calles más grandes de la ciudad.
Las actuales calles Heinrichstraße y Straße des Friedens siempre han formado la carretera de salida occidental de Gera. En la Edad Media, en el lugar del actual puente Heinrichsbrücke se encontraba el primer vado, que ya en el siglo XVI fue reemplazado por el primer puente. El puente ha sido destruido en varias ocasiones por inundaciones o el deshielo.
