El lugar, que cuenta con aproximadamente 150 habitantes, se encuentra en una isla de arena de valle, conocida como Kaupe, que mide 800 metros de largo y 400 metros de ancho, y se eleva dos metros sobre el nivel del terreno circundante, en medio del Spreewald. Está completamente rodeado de corrientes de agua, como el Spree y el Graben de Leiper. Leipe no estuvo conectado a la red de carreteras hasta la década de 1960, por lo que prácticamente solo se podía acceder a él por vía fluvial.
Las casas del lugar se encuentran, por lo tanto, en un óvalo a lo largo de la orilla de la isla, y presentan su fachada hacia el agua. Quien visita Leipe hoy en día por tierra accede a las propiedades desde atrás. El interior de la isla, y por ende el centro del pueblo, está deshabitado. Aquí se encuentran terrenos agrícolas.
