El Ilz es un afluente por la izquierda del Danubio que tiene aproximadamente 40 km en su tramo nombrado y casi 70 km en el tramo principal con sus afluentes, situado en el sureste del Bosque Bávaro.
El Ilz nace del lado alemán en la zona fronteriza bávaro-checa en el Parque Nacional del Bosque Bávaro. Sus ríos afluentes, Kleine Ohe, Große Ohe y Mitternacher Ohe, provienen de la región entre las montañas Rachel y Lusen. Se unen en la Ettlmühle cerca de la localidad de Eberhardsreuth en el municipio de Schönberg. Cerca de Fürsteneck, el Wolfsteiner Ohe aumenta el caudal del Ilz a más del doble. Los ríos afluentes del Wolfsteiner Ohe son el Reschbach y el más grande Saußbach, su principal afluente es el Osterbach.
