La colección del Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao reúne más de ocho mil piezas, entre pinturas, esculturas, obras sobre papel y artes aplicadas, en un destacado conjunto patrimonial que comprende una cronología desde el siglo XII hasta la actualidad. Conserva ejemplos relevantes de arte antiguo, moderno y contemporáneo, y tienen especial interés la pintura de las escuelas española y flamenca así como la nutrida presencia de los artistas vascos.
El museo posee la más importante colección de artistas vascos y es también, en ese aspecto, la institución de máxima referencia por sus fondos documentales, su tradición investigadora y su cercanía a los propios artistas.
