En julio de 1794, el Hôtel de ville fue escenario de violencia. Tras un reinado del terror liderado por Robespierre, los opositores intentaron tomar el poder. Temiendo ser capturado, el famoso revolucionario francés Maximilien Robespierre intentó suicidarse con una pistola, pero solo logró hacerse añicos la mandíbula. Otros, como su hermano Augustin, saltaron por la ventana del Hôtel de ville. Llevaron a Robespierre, con la mandíbula destrozada, para que fuera ejecutado. Fue retenido en la misma cámara de contención donde había estado Marie Antoinette, la esposa del rey Luis XVI, antes de su ejecución. El 28 de julio de 1794, Robespierre fue guillotinado sin juicio en la Place de la Révolution.
