Caen es una ciudad del oeste de Francia situada en la región de Normandía. Es la prefectura del departamento de Calvados; y desde el 1 de enero de 2016, sede del Consejo Regional de Normandía.
Desde la época galo-romana existe ya una forma de vida en torno a la actual Abadía de los Hombres , una iglesia dedicada a San Martín y un cementerio. Después de la invasión vikinga, en torno a 1020, se forma un burgo con varias iglesias y un mercado.
