HMS Victory fue botado en 1765 en Chatham Dockyard y fue comisionado en 1778.
Continuó en servicio activo durante los siguientes 34 años, incluyendo su momento más famoso: la Batalla de Trafalgar en 1805.
En 1812, la Victory fue retirada del deber en primera línea y anclada en el Puerto de Portsmouth, en la costa sur de Inglaterra.
Durante los siguientes 110 años, la Victory permaneció en su lugar de amarre en el Puerto de Portsmouth, cumpliendo una combinación de roles prácticos y ceremoniales.
En 1922, en medio de temores por su supervivencia continua, la Victory fue trasladada al Astillero de la Real Marina de Portsmouth y colocada en el Dique Seco No2. Luego comenzó el trabajo de restauración de la Victory a su condición de 'combate' de 1805, que continúa hasta hoy.
