El 1 de noviembre de 1570, la costa de los Países Bajos y de Flandes fue azotada por una enorme inundación conocida como la inundación de Todos los Santos. Muchas ciudades fueron afectadas, como Egmond, Bergen op Zoom y Saeftinghe. Pero algunas aldeas fueron incluso completamente inundadas y se les llama las aldeas ahogadas (Avenkerke en la isla de Wulpen, Cornsant en la isla de Bosch en el mar de Wadden, Klaaskinderkerke en Schouwen-Duiveland, Koezand en la desembocadura del Escalda Occidental, Moggershil al oeste de Tholen, Westende en la isla de Wulpen).
