El nombre Bronkhorst se mencionó por primera vez alrededor del año 1000 cuando un descendiente de Bruncharus, el primer conde de Hameland, supuestamente fundó un asentamiento con este nombre. Desde 1482, Bronkhorst tiene derechos de ciudad.
El pueblo fue planificado al pie del castillo de los señores de Bronckhorst. Entre los principales monumentos antiguos que se han conservado se encuentran la capilla y algunas casas con frontones, así como algunas viviendas con madera en los muros exteriores. El castillo, las murallas de la ciudad y los canales de la ciudad han desaparecido.
