En cuanto a ambiente y atractivo histórico, esta antigua ciudad hanseática y episcopal ocupa, según la opinión de evaluadores independientes en Limburgo, el segundo lugar después de Maastricht. En los puntos combinados de trabajar, vivir, comprar y cultura, solo estas dos ciudades limburguesas aparecen en el top diez nacional, así lo dictamina la revista de opinión Elsevier del 9/11/06.
La ciudad cuenta con un centro histórico con muchos monumentos, tales como:
- La catedral de San Cristóbal, cuya construcción comenzó en 1410. La iglesia fue construida en estilo gótico.
- La iglesia de Munster, una basílica de cruz, construida en el siglo XIII y restaurada por el famoso arquitecto Pierre Cuypers entre 1864 y 1891. La iglesia fue construida en estilo románico.
- La Torre de las Ratas, del siglo XIV, un vestigio de las antiguas fortificaciones de la ciudad que fue demolido en el siglo XVIII.
- La iglesia reformada (1400) con ampliaciones de los siglos XV y XVI.
