Wat Chai Sri Phum fue construido en 1519 durante el reinado del Rey Phra Mueang Kaeo (reinado 1495-1525). El monasterio se estableció en un lugar auspicioso donde había un árbol de higo considerado como un transportador de buena fortuna para la ciudad. El monasterio fue renovado en 1837 durante el reinado del Príncipe Phuthawong (Príncipe Phutthawong o Buddhavansa, reinado 1826-1846) y ahora es conocido localmente como Wat Phan Ta Kun.
