Le château de Laeken, construit en 1782, est entouré d’un grand parc de 120 ha. La résidence portait alors le nom de Schonenberg. Sous Napoléon, Schonenberg est devenu un quartier général militaire, et même une prison. Reconstruit à plusieurs reprises, le château est ensuite passé, après les révoltes contre Guillaume Ier, aux mains de l’État belge, qui en a fait la résidence de Léopold Ier. Tous nos rois, sauf Albert II, y ont eu leur résidence. Le Palais Royal de Bruxelles, situé à 7 km, sert de lieu de travail.
