L'église monumentale de Notre-Dame a été construite au milieu du 13ème siècle. Le chœur, en tant que plus ancien élément, est sans aucun doute le plus remarquable et porte encore les traces romanes.
Un projet de restauration de l'architecte Chrétien Veraart de 1902 nous montre à quoi l'église ressemblait probablement : une imposante tour occidentale en pierre avec un toit en bois, des rosaces dans les collatéraux, un portail nord et sud, et à l'intérieur, des voûtes en bois au lieu des voûtes à nervures ajoutées au 18ème siècle dans la nef.
Au 13ème siècle, le village était un lieu de pèlerinage marial très fréquenté, ce qui explique immédiatement la richesse de l'architecture et de la décoration du bâtiment.
