Rumbeke a produit l’un des plus grands noms du monde de la musique. Adriaen Willaert est né ici vers 1490. Quelques décennies plus tard, il deviendra maître de chapelle de la basilique Saint-Marc pendant trente-cinq ans. Un Kapellmeister est quelqu’un qui est chargé d’interpréter la musique. À l’époque, la Flandre était au sommet de la production musicale. Adriaen Willaert est considéré comme la figure centrale de l’école vénitienne et le pionnier du madrigal italien. Un madrigal est une forme de musique profane principalement vocale, originaire du nord de l’Italie au 14ème siècle.
