Sint-Amands peut être atteint par le ferry à vélos. Il se trouve à l'angle le plus beau de l'Escaut. Lorsque vous regardez le courant depuis la berge de Sint-Amands, les chaînettes de rivière dessinent une large courbe dans le méandre acéré. Dans le décor, se dresse la tour de l'église du village voisin de Mariekerke. C'est une description que l'auteur Émile Verhaeren, né à Sint-Amands mais écrivant en français, aurait approuvée avec enthousiasme. Il était si attaché à l'Escaut (et en particulier au méandre de Sint-Amands) qu'il souhaitait y être enterré dans la boue de la rivière. Sa tombe se trouve à deux pas, entre les roseaux sur la rive.
