Géologiquement, il n'y a pas beaucoup de pierres dans cette région. Et c'est le moins qu'on puisse dire. Il n'y a pas de pierres naturelles à trouver ici. C'est pourquoi ma curiosité a été éveillée par le toponyme "Steentjesbos". En soi, "pierre" ou "caillou" apparaît dans de nombreux toponymes flamands, car cela indique des roches qui remontent à la surface du sol. Mais ce n'est pas le cas ici. D'où viendrait alors ce nom ? Un panneau d'information à la lisière de la forêt donne l'explication :
"Le Steentjesbos tire son nom des sentiers forestiers pavés avec des morceaux de pierre restants d'un complexe de bâtiments gallo-romains."
