Neuengamme est un camp de concentration , établi le 13 décembre 1938, au sud-est de Hambourg sur le fleuve Elbe, d'abord comme camp extérieur du camp de Sachsenhausen puis transformé en 1940 en camp de travail indépendant avec plus de 90 camps extérieurs annexes.
Le 2 mai 1945, les SS abandonnent le camp. Le même jour, l'armée britannique y envoie une première patrouille de reconnaissance et découvre le camp vide. Le camp est libéré le 4 mai, deux jours plus tard, par les troupes britanniques. Y furent déportées 106 000 personnes dont 55 000 moururent .
