La rivière Emmer a été barrée en 1983 entre Schieder et Harzberg pour former le lac de Schieder. Au niveau du barrage, il y avait une différence de hauteur d'eau d'environ 10 mètres entre le niveau du lac et la rivière en contrebas. En 1996, l'entreprise de fourniture d'énergie Wesertal a construit une centrale hydroélectrique entièrement automatique d'une puissance de 0,3 mégawatt. Aujourd'hui, l'opérateur successeur de Wesertal, la Energieservice Westfalen Weser GmbH, gère l'installation. Une grande partie de l'eau de l'Emmer passe ici par la turbine et est utilisée pour la production d'électricité. Le reste est évacué par le déversoir hydrauliquement contrôlable sans utilisation énergétique.
