La Karthane est un affluent gauche de la Stepenitz dans le district de Prignitz. Sa longueur est de 48 kilomètres, elle a des affluents tels que le Cederbach et un certain nombre de petits ruisseaux et de fossés de prairie. Le bassin versant de la Karthane s’étend sur 436,8 km².
Les sources de la Karthane se trouvent dans la région au nord de Klein Woltersdorf dans la commune de Groß Pankow, près du village de Seefeld, entre le Butterberg, haut de 128 mètres, et le Wahrberg, haut de 120 mètres.
