Groppendorf a été mentionné en 1112 sous le nom de Grippendorf. En 1910, la commune rurale de Groppendorf comptait 209 habitants, et le district de Groppendorf en comptait 74. Le 30 septembre 1928, le district de Groppendorf a été fusionné avec la commune rurale de Groppendorf. En 1933, la caserne de pompiers volontaire, qui existe encore aujourd'hui, a été fondée dans le village. Le 1er juillet 1950, Groppendorf a été intégré à Hakenstedt. Le 1er janvier 2010, la commune a été intégrée à Erxleben.
Dans le village se trouve l'église St. Marie, datant du début du 13ème siècle. D'autres bâtiments classés sont la ferme au 7, Dorfstraße, et le domaine Veltheim au 13, 15 Dorfstraße, qui appartenait à la famille von Veltheim au château de Harbke.
