Le Klenderhof a été conçu en 1932 par l'architecte berlinois Otto Firle à la demande de Charlotte Baldner, une fille du propriétaire juif de grands magasins Leopold Lindemann, qui avait vendu ses 17 magasins au groupe Karstadt. La première esquisse avait été dessinée par Firle au dos d'un menu du Kurhaus de Kampen. La maîtresse d'ouvrage offrit l'édifice à son mari, le violoncelliste de renom Max « Bimbo » Baldner, qui avait acquis une renommée internationale avec le Quatuor Klingler. Le 30 janvier 1933, le jour de la prise de pouvoir par Hitler, la construction était achevée, et la famille Baldner emménagea à l'automne.
