Sa source se trouve au Steinbeck près de Revenahe. De là, il s'écoule vers le nord et reçoit sur sa droite le principal canal d'Apenser. Sur la gauche, le Griemsbach se jette dans ses eaux, prenant de l'eau dans la réserve naturelle de Braken et Harslah et s'écoulant en passant Griemshorst.
Sur la rive gauche du Steinbeck se trouve Weißenfelde et sur la droite Ruschwedel. Les deux lignes de chemin de fer Bremerhaven–Buxtehude et Harsefeld–Buchholz traversent le ruisseau. À Ruschwedel, le Steinbeck continue vers le nord-ouest et frôle Rutenbeck. Le ruisseau traverse la forêt Steinbeck et se jette au nord-est de Harsefeld dans l'Aue.
