Quintus Postumius Potens a tenu sa promesse à la déesse Diane (et a consacré la pierre à elle).
Elle a été érigée au IIe siècle apr. J.-C. comme pierre sacrée en l’honneur de la déesse Diane. On suppose qu'un habitant local romanisé prospère souhaitait remercier Diane pour une chasse particulièrement réussie ou pour son aide en cas de danger. Le culte de Diane était dans l'Eifel jusqu'à la fin du Moyen Âge une partie de la croyance populaire dans l'ensemble de la société. Selon la légende, le saint Willibrord aurait personnellement détruit la pierre commémorative lors de la christianisation de la région.
