En juillet 1794, l'Hôtel de ville était une scène de violence. Après un règne de terreur mené par Robespierre, des opposants ont tenté de prendre le pouvoir. Craignant d'être capturé, le célèbre révolutionnaire français Maximilien Robespierre a tenté de se suicider avec un pistolet mais n'a réussi qu'à se briser la mâchoire. D'autres, comme son frère Augustin, ont sauté par la fenêtre de l'Hôtel de ville. Ils ont emmené Robespierre à la mâchoire brisée pour être exécuté. Il a été placé dans la même cellule de détention où Marie-Antoinette, la femme du roi Louis XVI, avait été enfermée avant son exécution. Le 28 juillet 1794, Robespierre a été guillotiné sans procès sur la Place de la Révolution.
