Le 15 août 1944, un bombardier français B-26 Marauder et un B-17 américain ont tenté de détruire le pont ferroviaire et le pont routier qui surplombent la Durance à Sisteron. Les conditions météorologiques étaient défavorables et ils ont raté les ponts. L'un des bombardiers a accidentellement largué plusieurs bombes sur la ville. Celles-ci ont notamment touché une église pleine, entraînant 100 morts. La citadelle a également été gravement endommagée. Deux jours plus tard, ils ont tenté à nouveau de détruire les ponts. Et cette fois, avec succès.
