Caudry a une histoire similaire à celle de la ville de Gand en Belgique. Ici aussi, un métier à tisser a été volé d'Angleterre, et cela a marqué le début d'une industrie textile florissante basée sur la dentelle et le tulle. En 1913, il y avait 650 métiers à tisser et plusieurs milliers de tisserands actifs. Caudry est, avec Calais, le seul endroit où l'on fabrique encore de la dentelle.
