Le HMS Victory a été lancé en 1765 à Chatham Dockyard et a été mis en service en 1778.
Il a continué à servir activement pendant les 34 années suivantes, ce qui a inclus son moment le plus célèbre : la bataille de Trafalgar en 1805.
En 1812, le Victory a été retiré de son service de première ligne et est ancré dans le port de Portsmouth, sur la côte sud de l'Angleterre.
Pendant les 110 années suivantes, le Victory est resté à ses amarrages dans le port de Portsmouth, remplissant une combinaison de rôles pratiques et cérémoniels.
En 1922, au milieu des craintes pour sa survie continue, le Victory a été déplacé dans le chantier naval royal de Portsmouth et placé dans le bassin nº 2. Les travaux ont ensuite commencé pour restaurer le Victory à son état de 'combat' de 1805 et se poursuivent aujourd'hui.
