Les fossiles de coquillages peuvent être trouvés sur les rochers de la montagne du Pélion, même à des altitudes élevées, indiquant que les sommets du Pélion étaient autrefois au fond de la mer. Il y a environ 140 millions d'années, un mouvement orogénique ascendant d'une immense force a soulevé au-dessus des vagues marines une étroite bande de terre, qui s'étendait de la Macédoine et incluait l'Olympe, Kissavos, le Pélion et une partie de l'Éviie du Nord. Les montagnes du Pélion datent de cette époque.
