Dans le Lutterzand, il y avait de nombreuses maisons d'été. Celles-ci étaient particulièrement adaptées pour héberger des personnes en fuite. L'environnement boisé et isolé rendait difficile pour les Allemands de localiser les personnes en cachette. En plus des nombreux fugitifs, des pilotes qui avaient pu quitter leur avion endommagé à temps étaient également temporairement logés dans l'une des maisons d'été. De là, ils étaient dirigés vers la liberté via les différentes lignes de pilotes afin de pouvoir à nouveau participer aux actions de combat.
