Wat Chai Sri Phum a été construit en 1519 sous le règne du roi Phra Mueang Kaeo (règne 1495-1525). Le monastère a été établi sur un site auspicious où se tenait un figuier considéré comme un vecteur de bonne fortune pour la ville. Le monastère a été rénové en 1837 sous le règne du prince Phuthawong (Prince Phutthawong ou Buddhavansa, règne 1826-1846) et est maintenant connu localement sous le nom de Wat Phan Ta Kun.
