L'area dei Moeren corrisponde a una "bonifica". Questo è il termine per un lago naturale o un bacino artificiale che è stato prosciugato tramite pompaggio. Le più antiche bonifiche si trovano nella Regione del Noord-Holland e risalgono a poco prima del 1550. Questa data però è successiva. Fu il belga Wenceslas Cobergher che tra il 1622 e il 1626 riuscì a prosciugare il lago d'acqua dolce. Questo luogo era tuttavia un punto strategico, e la parte prosciugata è stata successivamente inundata più volte. Solo nel 1815 l'area fu definitivamente convertita in terreno agricolo.
