Con 'Prins de Ligne' si intende Carlo di Arenberg (1515-1616). Carlo, figlio di Jean de Ligne e Margherita vander Marck, ereditò il nome 'Arenberg' da sua madre, che nel suo contratto di matrimonio fece stabilire che i suoi figli potessero portare il nome estinto di Arenberg e lo stemma dei suoi antenati.
Originariamente, questa connessione tra la Naamsesteenweg e la Waversebaan non era più di una strada campestre. Fu pavimentata e nel 1905 ribattezzata via Prins de Lignestraat in occasione delle festività per il 75° anniversario dell'indipendenza belga.
