Da un documento dell'anno 1187, redatto per il conte delle Fiandre, sappiamo che all'epoca si estendeva una grande area paludosa nei dintorni di Aardenburg. Fonti successive hanno dimostrato che quest'area, con molto torba nel sottosuolo, comprendeva l'intera parrocchia di Sint-Laureins. Margherita di Costantinopoli concessi, nella seconda metà del XIII secolo, il permesso di estrarre quella torba. Allo stesso tempo, anche le ripetute inondazioni contribuirono non poco a dare a quest'area agricola la sua forma contemporanea. Oggi conoscerai un paesaggio in cui sia la forza della natura che la lotta dell'uomo contro di essa hanno lasciato il segno. In questo paesaggio di canali e argini scoprirai anche molto sulla creatività umana. Anche la storia di Reynaert de Vos è spesso ambientata qui. Qua e là nei cinque villaggi che insieme formano Sint-Laurens, incontrerai figure di questa storia.
