Veurne è stata praticamente la capitale del Belgio da ottobre 1914 all'inizio del 1915. Mentre il governo operava da Le Havre, l'esercito aveva il suo Grande Quartier Generale nel municipio di Veurne. Quando la città stessa venne sotto attacco (guarda le foto della Piazza), si decise di spostare il quartier generale a Houtem, il più lontano possibile dal fronte, ma ancora sul territorio belga.
Il re andava e veniva a Veurne, altri capi di stato e leader militari visitavano Veurne mentre la popolazione cercava di rimanere calma sotto la pressione di truppe e rifugiati provenienti dal resto del paese. I bambini persero le loro scuole a causa delle truppe, gli edifici storici persero il tetto.
