Machelen fu menzionata per la prima volta negli annali dell'Abbazia di San Pietro a Gand nel 697 , 820 e 830. Era conosciuto, tra l'altro, come Machlinio, che significava potente.
Il centro del paese con la chiesa è sorto nei pressi del Leie, su un'altura sulla curva esterna destra, chiamata "Machelen-put".
È pittorescamente situato su un braccio inutilizzato del Leie. Quel pozzo era quasi riempito . Ciò potrebbe essere evitato, anche grazie a Roger Raveel , artista nato e cresciuto a Machelen. Dal 1999 il pittore ha il suo museo nel suo villaggio natale.
Ogni anno, il sabato del primo fine settimana di settembre, a Machelen Put si svolgono i balli in vasca .
